Q. What is divine love?

When we talk about love related to the higher planes, we must always keep in mind that love comes from wisdom, that is, God’s wisdom is prior to his love, because to love something we have to know it first, and wisdom is the knowledge of the correct means to live, is also the science of the ultimate and first causes according to Aristotle. The wisdom is the same essence of God, in resume, because God is the most wise God loves kindly.
We can explain this issue in other words, fundamentally, the divine love is the love free of imperfections, such as guilt, shame, hate, or fear. This is so because God is the perfection in its greatest degree, and we cannot attribute imperfections to God. God, as the supreme being, is the love without passions. That is why this form of love receives a special name, love of charity or Agape. In the gospels when Jesus talked about the love he always used the word Agape, and this is what can be read in the first gospels written in the Greek language.
This love is the love perfected by the nature of the good, the love projected to the whole creation of God, the love towards the animals and the science for example. The apostle Paul in one of his epistles described to us this form of love: “Charity is patient, charity is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self- seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.
In philosophy this love is the love of the wise, and for this reason it is also called Platonic love. When men receive this form of love from above through Gnosis, we say that that person has reached spiritual illumination and the knowledge of the spiritual mysteries. This love blesses us, and changes us from the inside. God’s love once received gives us a different perception of reality, and we learn to see the world with God’s eyes. That is why Jesus says: “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again” John 3:3. For this love in the Bible men are called “sons of God” or “sons from above”.
